I’ve always envied runners. We used to go to a big family 4th of July party every year and my mom’s cousins would come in ‘late’ flaunting their Peachtree Road Race 10k shirts (if you’ve never heard of it it’s the largest (i think) 10k in the country – or at least one of the largest – 60,000 people!!) anyway – this was when I was about 10 years old (I’m now 30) and I kept saying that one day I’d run the Peachtree. Every year right before the race I would get the bug and would attempt to run… making it not even 1/8th of a mile before giving up. This went on for .. well …. 17 years before I signed up to WALK the Peachtree 10k. I was determined to do it and I was ok with walking it… and I did. But crossing that finish line put a bug in me. I knew that next year I would RUN it. I signed up for the Breast Cancer 3-day at the end of the year. 60miles over 3 days… they actually WONT let you run any part of it so I thought it was a good fit for me being a walker and all
Well, the 3 miles a day 4 days a week training got R-E-A-L-L-Y boring… so I started jogging a bit, then walking, then jogging, then walking just to make the 3 boring miles go by quicker…. I never pushed myself and only did what I could. Before I knew it I was jogging longer spurts without stopping. Then I decided to sign up for my 1st 5k. I started slow – didn’t expect to run the entire way – but DID and got 1st place in my age group with a time of 31:10!!!! (ok, so there were only 2 people in my age group and the other person walked… but still )
After that first 5k I was HOOKED. I signed up for another and another and then THE PEACHTREE – I ran the entire 10k…. kept running – signed up for my first 15k… ran the entire way….. and now after taking a little year and a half break to have our first child (Anna Claire AKA ‘AC’), I’m back at it and preparing for my first half marathon.
Someone who swore they could never run but WANTED to now working towards a 1/2 marathon (and eventually a marathon???) If you WANT to run – you CAN run. Hang in there.
About my me and my family
I was born and raised in Georgia – always lived on the ‘north’ side of town (Lilburn, Grayson then Loganville). Started college at the University of West GA where I was a Delta Delta Delta and then transferred to University of Georgia (UGA) for my last 2.5 years! I met my hubby through a mutual friend – and ironically he went to my highschool and was a senior when I was a freshman – I didn’t even know him!! We dated a year, got engaged and married 4 months later (I’m impatient hehe). I moved to his house (aka ‘the bachelor pad’) in Newnan, GA where we still live (although it’s slightly less guy-ish now). We were married for 3 years before we decided to have a kiddo – and within a month we were pregnant with Anna Claire (see- told you I was impatient haha).
AC is 20months old now and the love of our lives!!! She LOVES going on runs with me, singing, dancing, talking (non stop), and throwing her food on the ground…. I keep joking that I’m going to do a marathon before we decide to have #2 – well – kinda serious… we will see ;)
Oh – and I have severe undiagnosed ADD/ADHD, overcommitment issues, and diarrhea of the mouth (and fingers apparently). And unless I’m running you will rarely see me without a camera in front of my face :)
