Today Pam and I ran with PTC running club…Each month they have a “theme event” today’s theme was Relay…But it is a little different than a traditional relay…this is how the 4-Person Team Relay worked. We drew names to form teams. But each team had a slow man that’s time was supposed to be around a 11 min mile… the race took place on a 10K course, each team of four runners ran together as fast as they could to the 1st mile marker. The team will then decide which runner drops off while the remaining three run together as fast as they can to the 2nd mile marker. The team will then decide which runner drops off while the remaining two run together as fast as they can to the 3rd mile marker then the final runner will complete the 10K course..
Pam and I were on different teams. We were the chosen ones to drop off at mile 2.However we wanted to have a long run so decided we would run the whole course..
The slow man on our team whose time was supposed to be around a 11 min mile LIED…Our first mile pace was 9:15 which is about 15 seconds faster then Pam and I on a good day!!So I tried to run as fast as I could to mile #2 which seemed like the longest mile of my LIFE!! Pam was a little bit behind me so I stopped and waited so we could run the rest together…Really I just wanted a break! But so did she So we walked for about 5 minutes..After walking we were able to run the rest.
Our time was over a hour..We got beat by the guys on our teams that were 65-70 years old! I later found out that my pace from mile 1-2 was 8:15 wow that was fast guess it really wasn’t the longest mile of my life after all!!
Brag edit to Heather’s post: thanks to our awesome FAST team mates our groups got 2nd and 3rd place!!
But this taught us that PACE was very important and not to start out to fast (oh and that age is NOT an excuse – these guys ROCKED)!
